The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the joint defence service training institute of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services i.e. the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force train together before they go on to respective service academy for further pre-commission training. The NDA is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. It is the first tri-service academy in the world.

A cadet is allotted to one of the 18 Squadrons. Each squadron has approximately 100 to 120 cadets drawn from senior as well as junior courses under training in the Academy.

• No. 1 Battalion: Alpha Squadron (Apaches), Bravo Squadron (Braves), Charlie Squadron (Cheetahs) and Delta Squadron (Deadly Daggers).
• No. 2 Battalion: Echo Squadron (Eagles), Foxtrot Squadron (Fighters), Golf Squadron (Gladiators) and Hunter Squadron(Head Hunters).
• No. 3 Battalion: India Squadron (Injuns), Juliet Squadron (Jaguars), Kilo Squadron (Killers) and Lima Squadron (Lions).
• No. 4 Battalion: Mike Squadron (Mighty Mustangs), November Squadron (Ninjas), Oscar Squadron (Olympians) and Panther Squadron (Panthers).
• No. 5 Battalion: Quebec Squadron (Quasars) and Romeo Squadron (Rangers).

These Squadrons and their colours have great importance in a cadet’s life, so much so as to propel them to extreme levels to keep their squadrons ahead. The colours do retain their importance even after cadets graduate from NDA, with Ex-NDA officers forming an instant bond with their Squadron Mates, truly a relationship for life.
